Saint Mark emphasizes the humanity of Jesus, quite in contrast to Matthew's
Kingly Christ. With strong appeal to the humanity of Jesus, this Gospel
gives much emphasis to His servant ministries. Mark directs his message
to the Romans who understood human power and political structures. Mark
moves inside those concepts of power and shows that servanthood ministries
lead to redemptive actions by God. This redemptive servanthood is the
power greater than all other. It is not surprising that Mark's special
symbol is the Lion. All of us are called to the fullness of our humanity
which issues in servanthood and becomes the Power of God unto Salvation,
to the Jew first and also to the Greek.
